The God of Frolic

Suzanne collapsed forward onto Simon's chest and he looped his arms around her waist. They were both sweating, despite the relative coolness of his apartment, and both breathing hard. It took her a few moments before she could manage her legs well enough to roll off him onto the bed.

"I didn't hurt you?" she finally asked, pillowing her head on his shoulder.

He smiled dreamily. "The leg's just fine."

She brushed her fingers over his lips. "Your mother does good work."

His smile faded. "Yeah, she does. I just wish..." He bit off the sentence. "Never mind. I don't want to think about that right now." He kissed her forehead.

She sighed and kissed his collarbone. "I don't really want to go home."

"So don't," Simon said, running his fingers through her hair.

"I have to," Suzanne said. "The companion's only there until 11 tonight and..."

"And Ira goes to sleep at 10," Simon said, "and also is perfectly competent to take care of himself. He's not going to call for you in the middle of the night for a glass of water."

"He doesn't always go to sleep at 10," she said. "Lately he's been falling asleep in front of the television."

"That's what the companion is there to prevent," Simon said. "I know you love him and want to take care of him, but you deserve a life too."

"He'll wonder where I am. And he'll ask in the morning."

"So tell him where you were."

"I can't."

Simon sighed. "Well, I'm not going to waste time trying to change your mind." His hand drifted down her side to her hip. "But I'm going to take advantage." His fingertips slid down toward the bed, over the curve of her thigh. She gasped. "Of our time, I mean," he said, smiling.

"I... I'm not going to argue," Suzanne said around another gasp.

At that moment, her cell phone rang. Both of them cursed.

Suzanne leaned over the side of the bed and sorted through her clothes until she found her purse, buried and kicked aside. It wasn't Ira's ring, so who could it be? She extracted her phone and peered at its display in the dim light of the small, fringed light on the nightstand. "Oh," she said, flipping the sound off, "it's just Vita. She probably wants an exclusive, now that the funeral excitement has settled down," she said sourly. She tossed the phone into the purse detritus and rolled back toward Simon.

"We were, I think, starting something?" Simon said.

"Are you getting senile already, Mr. Canis?" Suzanne said, seizing the Great Blue Willie with enthusiasm.

"Oh, just momentarily forgetful, ma'am," Simon said with a grin, seizing something else that drew a muffled shriek of laughter from Suzanne. "I find you can always remind me of my evil intentions. And my most evil intention right now is to give you something to think about while watching the ball drop on TV tomorrow night."

From the author:

Just one more episode to the end of volume 1! August and September have been kind of mad and chaotic, so I'm not yet where I'd like to be with plotting out volume 2. I'm trying to decide whether we'll swing right into volume 2, or whether I'll drop in some short filler stories that you might enjoy, or whether I'll take a short break of a few weeks to get things hashed into better shape. We shall see what the next week brings me in terms of inspiration and time.

Thanks!
Jude

I would enjoy hearing possible thoughts along these lines.

Short stories sound like fun! However, if you need a break, take one. Burnout sucks. This would also be a good time for a fundraiser or friending drive, between volumes.

Well, this is a crowdfunding project. If you're up for audience interaction, consider a poll or a call for ideas. There are characters and other tidbits that I would like to see more of.
